Cosmetic Dentistry - Onlays and InlaysBeaumont - Port Arthur
Porcelain inlays and onlays can be used the same way regular fillings are used, but are made out of porcelain specifically for your cavity or other tooth damage. Inlays and onlays can be used to correct tooth damage and increase the strength of your tooth, instead of compromise the integrity of the tooth like normal tooth restorations. The difference between porcelain inlays and onlays is that inlays are placed inside of your tooth like a cavity filling and onlays are used to cover the outer surface of your tooth, similar to a crown. To have your teeth repaired with porcelain inlays or onlays, Dr. Smith will first remove all of the decayed or damaged tooth material. Then, a mold will be taken of your prepared tooth. After the mold has been taken, your tooth will be filled with a temporary filling while your custom porcelain inlay or only is created. Generally, it takes a couple weeks for the porcelain inlay or only to be created and sent back to Dr. Smith's cosmetic dentistry office. After Dr. Smith receives the porcelain inlay or onlay, you will be invited back to the dentist office for it to be bonded to your tooth. During your final visit to the cosmetic dentistry office, the surface of your tooth will be etched so that the porcelain inlay or onlay can be bonded better to the natural tooth. After the tooth has been etched, a bonding material will be applied to the porcelain inlay or onlay and to your tooth. The porcelain inlay or onlay will be placed, and the bonding material will be cured (hardened) with a special light. The result is an incredibly natural-looking dental restoration that will last for many years to come. A porcelain inlay or only will be able to restore both the look and function to your damaged tooth.
