Virtually none of our patients come into our office excited at the prospect of getting braces. Rather, they get excited about the results they are going to get after their braces come off. Whether you’re in your teens or you are an adult, getting braces may be the last thing you want to do for your image. However, as the most consistently effective way of straightening misaligned teeth, braces can give you that perfect smile in anywhere from a few months to a few years. Did you know that there are things that you can do to help ensure that you can get your braces off sooner than later? Read on to learn more.
Depending on your bite and how misaligned your teeth are, you may have to wear things like a retainer before you get braces or rubber bands while you have them on. And even though this stuff can be considered annoying, if you don’t do the work and follow instructions, you aren’t going to get that perfectly straight smile. After you leave Dr. Joel Smith’s office after every tightening, he will give you instructions on what you should do until your next appointment— to get your braces off sooner, make sure you are following those instructions.
Brush and Floss Regularly
As one of the easiest ways to speed up the time that you have to wear your braces for, make sure that you are brushing and flossing your teeth regularly. The longer that food, plaque, and tartar have to sit on your teeth and in between your brackets, the more likely you are to develop cavities. We encourage all of our patients to carry a toothbrush with them so that they can brush after each and every meal.
Watch the Food
Everyone knows that when you get braces, you are encouraged to avoid eating foods like popcorn, taffy, gum, and soda. Even though avoiding this list of foods may sound like pure torture, it will help you get your braces off faster. Sticky foods, in particular, can cause your wires to become loose and your brackets to fall off.
